Did you hear that the Seattle Seahawks traded for Jimmy Graham? As in, like, Jimmy Graham? Which is to say that Jimmy Graham is a Seahawk now, for real? Crazy, I know. Jimmy Graham. Wow. Soak it in.

But that’s not all! Yesterday was a crazy day for the entirety of the NFL, but particularly the Eagles Seahawks. After acquiring Graham, the ‘Hawks went out and found themselves a Byron Maxwell replacement. Welcome to Seattle, Cary Williams.

Williams is coming over from the Philadelphia Eagles, who are just all kinds of insane right now. He’s got a deal with Seattle for three years and $18 million, but you know how NFL contracts go. Here’s Aaron Wilson with the available details. The deal may last all three years, or Williams could just be a one-year stop gap guy. So it goes when only the first season is guaranteed.

The big thing with Williams: he’s not a star. Some would argue that he shouldn’t even be a starter. But he’ll probably slot in alongside the more familiar names of the LOB when the regular season rolls around. Do you trust John Schneider and Pete Carroll to develop anybodies into major contributors? If so, this will serve as somewhat of a test.

It’s easy to see this as a loss, since the Eagles are getting Seattle’s old awesome CB and the Seahawks are getting Philadelphia’s old mediocre CB. But there’s cost savings here, and by no means does this prohibit the ‘Hawks from going out and drafting a corner. In fact, many believe they’ll do just that, myself included. Williams won’t be useless, but he also won’t be keeping the position on lockdown. Which is why this is best viewed as a stopgap signing rather than the addition of a long-term building block.

At age 30 and with seven NFL seasons under his belt, Williams is seen as a known commodity. It’s critical to consider the group of coaches he’s going to work with in assessing his future value, which is why it’s unfair to write this off as a bad move. Plus, he’s got Richard Sherman there to work with. We’ve seen players thrive in this environment. Why not Cary Williams?

Welcome to the Legion of Boom, Cary Williams. Welcome to Seattle! We’re glad to have you, even if you don’t have any new tricks up your sleeve.
