Seattle Seahawks Sign CB Will Blackmon

The first move made by the Seattle Seahawks to reinforce their cornerback group is adding former Seahawk Will Blackmon. I use “former” loosely there. Blackmon only lasted about six months on the team and was cut before the regular season.

The Seahawks made attempts to bring back Byron Maxwell, but were not able to compete with the six-year, $63 million deal that the Philadelphia Eagles could offer after unloading LeSean McCoy‘s $15 million cap hit.

Seattle will have to make multiple moves to add both a starter, and depth to a currently depleted defensive backfield. If the season started today, Tharold Simon would start out wide, and Marcus Burley would be the nickel. That isn’t exactly ideal for the best defense in the NFL.

In 23 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars over the past two seasons, Blackmon accounted for 70 tackles, three fumbles forced, one fumble recovered, two sacks, an interception and eleven passes defended.

Blackmon has also been an effective return man at times in his career. In 2008, he returned 36 punts for 398 yards and two touchdowns for the Green Bay Packers. He was ninth in the NFL in return average and third in touchdowns.

If you want to know more about Blackmon as a person, here is his personal website.

On the field, he doesn’t figure to see too much time at corner unless injuries deplete the Seahawks further. However, he will be a good depth player and will compete for punt return duties.

This is a good signing for the ‘Hawks, assuming the price tag was around $1 million or less. It is no guarantee that Blackmon will make the 53-man roster come September, but at this point, any corner they can sign is a good corner.
