The Mariners are letting teams know that Jesus Montero and Justin Smoak are available in trade talks, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). The report comes on the heels of the Mariners striking deals to add Corey Hart and Logan Morrison to their lineup.
I think everything that surrounds the discussion of whether or not Edgar Martinez is pretty fascinating. On one hand, we have the fact that he was a designated hitter. Is someone who doesn’t play the field valuable enough to his team where he should be considered for the Hall? I say yes, but he better be a damn good hitter, because defense matters in baseball (this seems to be the common point of view). So if you agree that DH’s should be allowed in, was Martinez a good enough hitter to warrant a vote? This, once again, brings up the argument of traditional versus advanced metrics.

Head coach Pete Carroll addressed the media this afternoon ahead of the team’s 1:45 p.m. “Competition Wednesday” practice and preparation for the club’s Week 15 contest with the New York Giants (5-8) at MetLife Stadium.
Center Max Unger, who suffered a chest injury in the fourth quarter of last Sunday’s game against San Francisco 49ers, will sit out today’s practice with the hope of returning to action on Thursday or Friday.
“We think he’ll make it for Sunday,” Carroll said.
